The second chapter of Apple’s iPhone era is almost ready to begin, and it’s already clear that things will be a little different this time around.
Few people who pay even scant attention to the technology industry could claim to be shocked by the introduction of a faster iPhone earlier on Monday by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Apple has sold 6 million iPhones since June 2007, Jobs said, and will likely sell a few more once the new model arrives on July 11 with a faster networking chip, GPS capabilities, and a software upgrade that’s an IT manager’s dream for a mobile device.

In a big shift for the phone industry, women have emerged as eager buyers of not just iPhones but of all so-called smartphones — BlackBerrys, Treos and other models.
In the last year the number of American women using smartphones more than doubled to 10.4 million, growing at a faster pace than among men, according to Nielsen Mobile, which tracks wireless trends.

Phone alerts during emergencies came a step closer to reality Thursday, when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is a framework for a national, mobile alarm system.
The Mobile Commercial Alert System (CMAS) is a voluntary system wireless providers available to send the text message blasts in the event of a national disaster such as Hurricane Katrina, or the 11th September 2001 terrorist attacks.
Alerts will be available in three forms: presidential headlines; threat headlines and child abduction emergency or Amber headlines.
